Dict

Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 19, 2026

This policy explains what data the Dict app ("Dict", "we", "us") uses, why, and what control you have over it. It applies to Dict on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

In short: Dict has no accounts and no ads. Your dictionaries and words stay on your devices and in your own iCloud - we can't see them. We collect anonymous usage analytics to improve the app, send a word to an AI service only when you ask for its details, and read the feedback you choose to send us. We never sell your data or use it to track you across other apps or websites.

1. Your dictionaries and words

The dictionaries you create and the words, translations and study progress in them are stored on your device and synced between your devices through Apple's iCloud (CloudKit), in your own private iCloud storage. We have no access to them. Your settings, such as the app's language and appearance, are stored on your device.

You can delete a word or a dictionary at any time in the app. Deleting the app removes its data from the device; the copy in your iCloud can be removed in your device's iCloud settings.

2. What happens only on your device

3. Speech recognition

When you add a word or practice by speaking, Dict uses Apple's speech recognition. Depending on your device and language, Apple may process the recording on its servers under Apple's Privacy Policy. We don't receive or store your recordings.

4. Word details (AI)

When you request a word's details - its forms, transcription and other meanings - the word or phrase and the languages of its dictionary are sent to OpenAI, which generates them. Nothing that identifies you is sent with it. Under OpenAI's API terms, this data is not used to train its models and may be kept for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse. Details are requested only when you add a word with "Get word details" on, ask for a word's details, or update the details of your words.

5. Usage analytics

To understand how the app is used and what to fix, Dict sends usage events to Amplitude, our analytics provider. They include:

Analytics never include your words, translations or anything you type. We don't use analytics for advertising and don't combine it with data from other companies.

6. Feedback you send us

When you send feedback from the app, it includes what you choose and write, together with technical information: the app version, your device and its operating system, the app's language and region, your plan, the languages and word counts of your dictionaries (never the words themselves), the screen you sent it from, the random identifier described above and, for a report sent from an error message, details of that error. Before you send it, the app tells you what goes with it.

"Send" delivers the report through our server, hosted by Cloudflare, to our support mailbox at Google Workspace. Reports waiting for an internet connection are kept on your device and deleted once sent, or after 30 days. "Write to us by email" opens your own mail app instead, so we also receive your email address and can reply to you.

We use feedback only to answer you and improve Dict, and delete it when it's no longer needed for that.

7. Purchases

Subscriptions are bought and managed through Apple. We never see your payment details. The app checks with Apple which plan, if any, is active on your Apple Account, and counts on your device how many word details you've used this month.

8. App configuration

Dict loads its settings, such as plan limits, from GrowthBook when it starts. No personal data is sent with this request.

9. Who processes your data

We use these service providers, each only for the purpose described above:

They may process data in the United States and other countries. We don't sell or rent your data to anyone.

10. How long we keep data

Analytics are kept as long as they help us improve the app, and feedback as long as we need it to answer and act on it. We delete data on request, as described below.

11. Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the CCPA), you may have the right to access the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, object to or restrict its use, and receive a copy of it. To use these rights, write to [email protected]. Because we don't know who you are, we may ask for something that lets us find your data, such as the email you wrote to us from or the time you sent a report. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

The legal bases we rely on are our legitimate interest in running and improving the app (analytics, feedback) and providing the features you ask for (word details, purchases).

12. Children

Dict isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we'll delete it.

13. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update it here and change the date at the top. For significant changes, we'll let you know in the app.
